Benefits of Waitrose No.1 fat free Greek yoghurt

This product comes with the usual health benefits of yoghurt as well as a great nutritional profile. For context, we’ll compare a few key factors against Tesco high protein yoghurt - which is a similar product with high protein and very low fat.

Live cultures

Waitrose No.1 fat free Greek yoghurt includes Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus. These are two classic yoghurt starter cultures.

Waitrose doesn’t give any information on the actual amount of them though (ie colony forming units).

For comparison, Tesco high protein yoghurt doesn’t give any information related to the live cultures (ie type or amount).

Postbiotics

Postbiotics are beneficial substances produced by live cultures during fermentation. In yoghurt, these can include small amounts of organic acids, peptides and other fermentation by-products.

Nutrients

This yoghurt has very good health measures which are broadly similar to Tesco high protein yoghurt, although it stands out in terms of calcium content.

Protein: It has very high protein levels at 10% - which is below Tesco at 11.3%

Fat: The label states this yoghurt has 0g of fat per 100g. Tesco states it has 0.4g of fat per 100g.

Sugar: The sugar content is moderate at 3.1% - which is below Tesco’s level of 3.9%.

Calcium: Waitrose has excellent calcium levels of 233mg per 100g. In contrast, Tesco has almost half this with 120mg per 100g.

Appearance

As the picture below shows, it holds a very irregular shape in the bowl. It is quite ‘sticky’ and hard to get off the spoon.

Texture

The texture is very thick and even though there is no fat, there is a decent level of creaminess.

Flavour

The aroma is mainly of savoury cheese.

The taste has a moderate savoury cheese character - but what really stands out is the acidity. Oh boy is it high. The sides of your tongue tingle and it’s hard to focus on much else! But it is clear there are no obvious flaws in the taste and no dreaded chalkiness which is common in no fat, high protein yoghurt.

Overall, for a high protein yoghurt with no fat, and putting aside the acidity for a moment, the taste is pretty good. But really you can’t ignore the acidity - it is very high, among the highest we’ve ever reviewed.

Use

The usability of this yoghurt will depend on your tolerance of acidity. If you like acidic yoghurt this could be had on its own or added to cereal. If you don’t, then maybe this would be best lost in a smoothie.

The absence of fat may mean it wouldn’t work well in dressings or marinades.

Cost of Waitrose No.1 fat free Greek yoghurt

You can buy a 500g tub from Waitrose for £2.40 - which is on the more expensive end of the spectrum for this type of yoghurt.
