Remedy Sodaly review

Remedy Sodaly

Here we will give a hands-on, taste-tested review of Remedy Sodaly - a low calorie, prebiotic soda. We’ll look into the benefits, ingredients, nutrition and flavour of this gut-focused drink.

For this review we have taste-tested the guava version.

You can find Remedy Sodaly in many Australian supermarkets and food stores. It is not widely available in the UK.

Ingredients of Remedy Sodaly

Remedy Sodaly is a sugar-free, low-calorie soda which means that it largely relies on natural flavourings and sweeteners for taste.

A word on sweeteners

Regular readers will know that I don’t love sweeteners - whether they are natural or artificial. This is because artificial sweeteners have been shown to negatively affect gut microbe composition - and so it could be that natural sweeteners also have a negative affect on your gut. But more research is needed.

Read more about the natural sweetener stevia and some of the research (with mixed results) that has been done on it.

Here’s the specific ingredients of Remedy Sodaly: carbonated water, apple cider vinegar, plant-based sweeteners (erythritol & steviol glycosides), natural flavours, black carrot extract (colour).

As you can see, there’s no actual guava in this drink (eg juice, concentrate or puree), just natural guava flavouring. And the colour even comes from black carrots.

To me it feels a bit manufactured and inauthentic to rely only on added natural flavouring for taste. Others may not be bothered by this though.

Benefits of Remedy Sodaly

This drink comes with some health benefits. It is not as beneficial as other gut health products like kombucha or kefir, but it compares very favourably to a soft drink.

Prebiotics

Prebiotics are compounds which promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut. Usually these are some type of fibre (eg inulin or acacia fibre) or prebiotic vegetables (eg leeks, onion, asparagus etc).

After reading the ingredients in this soda, you may be wondering what is prebiotic in this drink? Well, it’s actually the apple cider vinegar.

Apple cider vinegar acts as a prebiotic because it contains pectin, a type of fibre found in apples.

Also, organic acids like acetic acid in apple cider vinegar can help create an environment that inhibits harmful bacteria while favouring the growth of beneficial bacteria.

Other benefits of apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar can also help with blood sugar control, weight loss, heart health and more.

Low in calories

This soda has zero sugar and only 3 calories per 100ml. So it is far superior than a normal soft drink from a health perspective.

Flavour

The aroma is a strongly of guava and a touch of lemon. The aroma is so strong - stronger than actual guava juice would be - that it seems artificial (even though it only contains natural flavourings).

The taste is quite subtle guava fruitiness and it lacks any real depth. However, it is pleasant enough and refreshing.

Also, you can’t taste any apple cider vinegar which I was expecting to. That’s probably a good thing because that taste can sometimes be unappealing in a drink.

Like their other drinks (eg Remedy kombucha), the carbonation is too high. I found myself burping after each sip and that’s just not pleasant.

Cost of Remedy Sodaly

You can buy a cold 330ml bottle for $4 in Coles or Woolworths supermarkets in Australia. Or you can buy a warm 4 pack of 250ml cans for $8.

Or you can buy it cheaper in bulk from Amazon.

Factors we consider in our ratings

The factors we consider when doing a review (and the weightings of each of these) may vary depending on the product we are testing, but here are the key general factors we consider when we settle on a rating for a product.

Health benefits

We find out how the product will be good for your health and outline the benefits for you in simple language. This often involves doing research so you don’t have to. We often link to scientific studies or articles summarising scientific findings so you can dig deeper if you want to.

Things detrimental to health

We want to highlight where a product might include something bad for your health - even if it might be good for you in another way. This could include such things as pointing out certain additives it contains or high sugar levels.

How it’s made

This will vary depending on the product, but we want to see a quality process for making it and quality ingredients. For example, we want to see a kombucha traditionally fermented with lots of different microbial strains and we want to see a yoghurt made with fresh milk and not milk powders.

Price

While we expect quality products to be more expensive, they still have to be priced within reason. On the other side of things, a product which is priced very competitively will get a ratings boost based on the value it provides.

Flavour

For some products flavour won’t be a factor (eg probiotic tablets), but for others, like yoghurt or kimchi, flavour is a key aspect because these products are made to be enjoyed as well as being healthy! We will try to be as subjective as possible and describe the flavour in detail so you can get an idea of whether you would like it or not.
