Benefits of Blackmores Probiotics+

This supplement comes with various benefits related to its probiotics and prebiotic fibre. For context, we’ll compare some factors against YourBiology Gut+ probiotic which is a more premium, holistic supplement.

Probiotics

Probiotics are live cultures (usually bacteria) which have been proven to give us health benefits.

Blackmores Probiotics+ includes five strains of probiotics which are:

  • Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 700396 – Supports digestion, helps maintain a healthy balance of intestinal microflora and may aid in maintaining vaginal health.

  • Lactobacillus paracasei Lpc-37 – Contributes to healthy immune function and supports gut barrier integrity.

  • Bifidobacterium lactis Bi-07 – Promotes digestive health, supports immune system function and may help reduce intestinal transit time.

  • Bifidobacterium lactis Bl-04 – Supports healthy immune function and helps maintain balanced gut microbiota.

  • Bifidobacterium lactis HN019 – Supports gut motility, promotes regular bowel function and may help improve overall digestive comfort.

Collectively, these strains provide 30 billion colony forming units per capsule.

In contrast, YourBiology Gut+ probiotic includes 10 different probiotic strains and provides 20 billion colony forming units.

Prebiotics

Prebiotics are essentially fibres which promote the growth of probiotics (ie beneficial microbes) in the gut.

This supplement contains one type of prebiotic fibre in the form of inulin.

For comparison, YourBiology Gut+ includes two types of prebiotics - which is useful because different prebiotics favour different probiotic strains.

Dosing

The dosing guidelines are 1 capsule per day with a meal.

My experience taking it

As the picture below shows, the capsules are of a medium size and are easy to swallow. They are best taken with food to prevent any stomach upset.

Cost of Blackmores Probiotics+

Blackmores Probiotics+ regularly costs $25 for a 30-pack from Chemist Warehouse - although the RRP is $33.

You can also sometimes find it on special in Coles and Woolworths.

Blackmores Probiotics+ capsules

Would I recommend it?

Blackmores Probiotics+ is a decent choice for a mid-range probiotic.

However, it doesn’t offer the full range of benefits which YourBiology Gut+ does, such as 10 strains of probiotics, vitamin D and digestive enzymes.

If you are looking to save money though, this (and other brands in this price range) might be a good choice.

Review summary

Rating: 4 stars out of 5.

Verdict: Blackmores Probiotics+ presents a decent mid-range choice. It includes 5 probiotic strains and one type of prebiotic fibre for a fairly reasonable price.

Pros

  • good actual number of bacteria with 30 billion colony forming units per capsule

  • contains a prebiotic fibre

  • five strains of probiotics (but this is much below some other brands)

Cons

  • no vitamin D or digestive enzymes (which some alternatives offer)

  • no information on how well the probiotics survive your stomach acid to get to your lower gut alive

Factors we consider in our ratings

The factors we consider when doing a review (and the weightings of each of these) may vary depending on the product we are testing, but here are the key general factors we consider when we settle on a rating for a product.

Health benefits

We find out how the product will be good for your health and outline the benefits for you in simple language. This often involves doing research so you don’t have to. We often link to scientific studies or articles summarising scientific findings so you can dig deeper if you want to.

Things detrimental to health

We want to highlight where a product might include something bad for your health - even if it might be good for you in another way. This could include such things as pointing out certain additives it contains or high sugar levels.

How it’s made

This will vary depending on the product, but we want to see a quality process for making it and quality ingredients. For example, we want to see a kombucha traditionally fermented with lots of different microbial strains and we want to see a yoghurt made with fresh milk and not milk powders.

Price

While we expect quality products to be more expensive, they still have to be priced within reason. On the other side of things, a product which is priced very competitively will get a ratings boost based on the value it provides.

Flavour

For some products flavour won’t be a factor (eg probiotic tablets), but for others, like yoghurt or kimchi, flavour is a key aspect because these products are made to be enjoyed as well as being healthy! We will try to be as subjective as possible and describe the flavour in detail so you can get an idea of whether you would like it or not.
