Best Coles-brand yoghurt overall
Coles Greek style yoghurt
Coles Greek style yoghurt is the best Coles-brand yoghurt as it provides excellent value for money and a good taste.
This natural yoghurt contains skimmed milk, cream, milk solids and live cultures.
It doesn’t contain any additives and doesn’t use milk powders.
It has high levels of fat, but has good levels of calcium and a decent amount of protein.
Unfortunately it doesn’t give any information on the strains of probiotics included or the amount of them.
Flavour
The texture is pretty good - decently thick and fairly creamy.
The aroma is not very strong, but there are some characteristics of mature cheddar cheese.
The taste is of savoury cheese with a moderate sourness. It also has a nice creaminess.
Overall, the taste is good - which is especially impressive given the low price.
Cost and availability
You can buy a 1kg tub from Coles for $4.10 - which I think is great value for a product which tastes good and doesn’t use any milk powders.
Summary
Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5.
Verdict: Coles Greek style yoghurt provides great value and a good taste. It’s a shame some of its gut health qualities are unclear.
Pros

great value
simple, natural recipe with no milk powders
no additives like sweeteners, thickeners or flavourings
decent protein levels
high in calcium
Cons
no information given on the strains of probiotics included or the amount of them

Best tasting Coles-brand yoghurt
Coles pot set natural Greek style yoghurt
Coles pot set natural Greek style yoghurt is the best tasting of the Coles-brand options. It’s more expensive than the normal Coles Greek style yoghurt above, but it still provides good value for money.
Pot set yogurt is cultured (ie fermented) and set directly in the container it will be sold in. Other yoghurts which aren’t pot set are cultured in a larger vat and then stirred to create a more smooth texture. You can read more about pot set yoghurt in our best yoghurts in Australia article.
This natural yoghurt only includes skimmed milk, cream, milk solids and live cultures.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t give any information on which probiotic strains are included. However, it does state there are over 1 billion colony forming units of live cultures per 100g.
It is fairly high in fat at 8.6% and fairly low in protein at 3.4%. This pot set version has 118mg of calcium per 100g which is much less than Coles Greek style yoghurt (192mg).
Flavour
The texture is thick and more creamy than other pot set yoghurts. It does still have the typical lumpy texture of pot set yoghurts though.
The aroma is soured milk as you would expect but also with some savoury cheese notes.
The taste is more on the sour side than other brands (not a bad thing in my opinion) with subtle cottage cheese characteristics.
Overall, the taste is very good but with that pot set lumpy texture which I find a bit lacklustre.
Cost and availability
The normal retail price for a 1kg tub from Coles is $5.50.
Summary
4.25 stars out of 5.
An authentic, natural pot set yoghurt with a lovely taste. The texture is not as good as some other yoghurts which aren’t pot set though.
Pros
nice taste (provided you don’t mind a higher level of sourness)
simple natural ingredients with no additives
good value
Cons
fairly high in fat
texture is a bit lacking - as is common with pot set yoghurt
low in protein and calcium compared to others
no information on which probiotic strain are included

Best Coles-brand high protein yoghurt
Coles Perform high protein Greek yoghurt
Coles Perform high protein Greek yoghurt provides great macros with very high protein and very low fat - but its taste is a let down.
It has very high levels of protein (9.4%) and very low levels of fat (less than 1g per 100g).
It has extremely simple ingredients with only skimmed milk and live cultures.
Unfortunately it doesn’t given any information on which strains of probiotics are included or the actual amount of them.
Flavour
The texture is thick but not in a nice creamy way - given the near absence of fat.
The aroma is not very strong but slightly of savoury cheese.
The taste is rather ‘empty’ like most high protein, low fat yoghurts. It has a bland milky taste, followed by a chalky aftertaste. And the sourness is moderate.
Overall, the taste is underwhelming and the lack of fatty creaminess is very apparent.
Cost and availability
You can buy a 900g tub from Coles for $6.20.
Summary
Rating: 3.75 stars out of 5.
Verdict: Coles Perform high protein Greek yoghurt provides very high protein levels with very low levels of fat. Like others in this category, its taste is its downfall.
Pros
very simple recipe with no milk powders
no additives like sweeteners, thickeners or flavourings
high protein levels
very low in fat
fairly good calcium levels
Cons
taste is nothing to write home about
lacks creaminess
no information given on the strains of probiotics included or the amount of them

Health benefits of yoghurt
Live cultures
These are the live microbes you are ingesting when you eat yoghurt. And many are considered probiotic which means they bring health benefits.
Probiotics offer many health benefits including:
better digestive health
better immune function
reduced inflammation
reduced allergies
better nutrient absorption
Postbiotics
In simple terms, postbiotics are essentially things probiotics produce. These include short-chain fatty acids which nourish our gut lining and may help reduce symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.
Vitamins and minerals
Yoghurt is a source of various vitamins and minerals including::
calcium - which helps digestion and supports bone and teeth health
magnesium - which supports bone health, muscle function and energy production
phosphorus - which is important for bone and teeth health and energy metabolism
potassium - which supports heart, muscle, nerve and kidney health
vitamins B2 and B12 - which support immunity, energy production and cell and nerve function
vitamin A - supports vision, immune function, cell growth and healthy skin
Satiety and weight management
The high protein and low carbohydrate content in yogurt, especially Greek-style yogurt, helps you feel fuller for longer which can help control your appetite. Greek yoghurt is often recommended by dietitians for this reason.
Reduced lactose
Compared to unfermented dairy products such as milk, yoghurt has lower levels of lactose as this is partially consumed during the fermentation process by the bacteria. This makes it more digestible for people who have some degree of lactose intolerance.
Factors we consider in our ratings
The factors we consider when doing a review (and the weightings of each of these) may vary depending on the product we are testing, but here are the key general factors we consider when we settle on a rating for a product.
Health benefits
We find out how the product will be good for your health and outline the benefits for you in simple language. This often involves doing research so you don’t have to. We often link to scientific studies or articles summarising scientific findings so you can dig deeper if you want to.
Things detrimental to health
We want to highlight where a product might include something bad for your health - even if it might be good for you in another way. This could include such things as pointing out certain additives it contains or high sugar levels.
How its made
This will vary depending on the product, but we want to see a quality process for making it and quality ingredients. For example, we want to see a kombucha traditionally fermented with lots of different microbial strains and we want to see a yoghurt made with fresh milk and not milk powders.
Price
While we expect quality products to be more expensive, they still have to be priced within reason. On the other side of things, a product which is priced very competitively will get a ratings boost based on the value it provides.
Flavour
For some products flavour won’t be a factor (eg probiotic tablets), but for others, like yoghurt or kimchi, flavour is a key aspect because these products are made to be enjoyed as well as being healthy! We will try to be as subjective as possible and describe the flavour in detail so you can get an idea of whether you would like it or not.
